Course Summary

Learn to build an EDD to drive the structure of elements and format of content. Gain knowledge and skill required to create and manage the EDD and build professional templates. To convert to and from XML correctly you need to manage read and write rules. Acquire hands–on experience in the development of rules to convert content to and from XML.

Course Description

Overview: This five–day course teaches participants skills necessary to create Element Definition Documents (EDD) and Read/Write rules for use with Structured FrameMaker. This course is developed specifically for clients requiring structured templates and user import and export of content to and from XML.

Delivery: An instructor–led, group–paced, classroom–delivery learning model with structured hands–on activities and assignments.
Courses are also available for private online delivery.

Materials: Participants receive reference materials related to course topics. Follow up support by email or phone, on topics covered, is available to participants for 90 days.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion attendees will be able to:
  • Understand the Element Definition Document (EDD) and its relation to structure and FrameMaker
  • Identify the differences between an EDD and a Document Type Definition (DTD)
  • Develop, modify, and delete elements from an EDD
  • Specify element frequency as required, optional or repeatable and element order
  • Develop, modify and delete attributes from an EDD
  • Apply formatting using predefined document formats based on elements, attributes and values
  • Format content using EDD settings, template content and Format Change Lists
  • Develop structural rules related to books, generate files, chapters, appendices
  • Import and export XML files and FrameMaker
  • Modify elements, attributes and values on import and export
  • Convert images to and from XML and FrameMaker
  • Develop cross–references in FrameMaker and XML using ID attributes and values
  • Export and import table related elements
  • Correctly import and export markers and marker content
  • Build an XML application to apply a template, reference read and write rules and configure other setting specific to the application file for conversion to and from XML and FrameMaker
