DITA:  Tools and Technology Overview

Course Summary

The Darwin Information Typing Architecture is the new standard leading the way in topic based authoring. Learn what you need to know to get your documents DITA compliant and see which tools will get you there fastest. Get comfortable with the concepts and rules of XML. Explore the DITA standard and how it implements XML tagging. Finally, acquire hands–on experience to guide your understanding of the tools that work with XML and DITA.

Course Description

Overview: This two–day course teaches participants skills necessary to understand the DITA specification. Participants also see how a variety of tools implement the DITA standard and work with structured content.

Delivery: An instructor–led, group–paced, classroom–delivery learning model with structured hands–on activities and assignments.
Courses are also available for private online delivery.

Materials: Participants receive reference materials related to course topics. Follow up support by email or phone, on topics covered, is available to participants for 90 days.

Prerequisites: You must have a solid working familiarity with your operating system and a general familiarity with tools like Microsoft Word, JustSystems XMetaL or Adobe FrameMaker.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion attendees will be able to:
  • Identify XML tagging and syntax in relation to DITA
  • Understand the DITA specification and the core set of elements it uses
  • Create Topic, Reference, Concept and Task elements for use as stand–alone files or as part of a map document
  • Build DITA map documents
  • Work with a variety of software tools to create DITA based content
  • Use Adobe FrameMaker, JustSystems XMetaL, oXygen XML, Altova XMLSpy and other tools build DITA files
  • Run basic transforms using the DITA toolkit
  • Identify key issues to consider when implementing DITA and converting legacy content
