Creating Usable Indexes:  A Systematic Approach

Course Summary

If creating useful, well–structured indexes is your goal, this course is ideal for you. Lead by a veteran indexing guru—Richard "Dick" Evans—this class provides individual attention, expert guidance, and hands on experience you need to tackle even the most daunting indexing project. Dick addresses issues in a one–on–one environment within the class to get you up and running when you return to work and an evaluation of your current indexing project.

Course Description

Overview: This two–day course teaches participants skills necessary to buid a professional index. It provides an analysis of real world indexes and theories associated with building well–structured indexes.

Delivery: An instructor–led, group–paced, classroom–delivery learning model with structured hands–on activities and assignments.
Courses are also available for private online delivery.

Materials: Participants receive reference materials related to course topics. Follow up support by email or phone, on topics covered, is available to participants for 90 days.

Duration: 2 days

Fee: $795 (call for group or onsite discount)

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR. Richard Evans is a retired human factors engineer, experienced in designing and conducting usability tests for indexes and other types of documentation. He has been a freelance indexer since 1992, specializing in computer books and averaging 40 titles (about 15k pages) per year. Evans conducts indexing workshops designed to teach students how to plan, create, and evaluate indexes for maximum usability. Evans is a senior member of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and a past president of the American Society of Indexers (ASI).
